Pickleball 101: What You Need to Know to Get Started
Pickleball 101 for quick tips and beginner pointers. Pickleball is a fun, social and fast-growing sport that combines elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis. It’s played with a paddle and a plastic ball with holes, either indoors or outdoors, on a court about a third the size of a tennis court.
What Is Pickleball?
Pickleball is played as singles or doubles, with the goal of scoring points by serving and rallying until one side commits a fault. It’s suitable for all ages and skill levels, making it perfect for families, beginners and active older adults alike.
How Do You Play?
- The game begins with an underhand serve
- Only the serving team can score
- Points are played until 11 (win by 2)
- Players must let the ball bounce once on each side before volleys (the double bounce rule)
- No volleying allowed in the 7-foot “kitchen” zone near the net
What Do You Need?
- A Pickleball paddle (lighter than a tennis racket)
- Pickleball balls (with holes, similar to Wiffle balls)
- Court shoes or trainers with grip
- A court with a lowered net (many tennis courts can be adapted)
